The more I looked at this strange, pale man, William Dockson, the more my fear turned to rage.
Who did he think he was? This man was a stranger intruding on my home, my safe space, hiding in my closet and he had the nerve to claim this was his house? The house I had dreamed of owning since I was a little girl and spent my entire life savings on? Hell no. I will not stand for that.
“You’re a liar,” I said, still brandishing the ceramic vase over my head like a weapon. “This isn’t your house. This is my house. I paid for this house with my own savings..”
William seemed unfazed by my hysterics. His face didn’t move, not even a twitch. I was beginning to think that this man was incapable of normal human expression.
“I mean no disrespect.” He said. “But I’m going to have to ask you to calm down. I have a rational explanation for all of this. I just need you to calm down enough for you to listen to me for a moment.”
A new, stronger wave of rage washed over me. The nerve of this man, this intruder to ask me to hear him out.
“No!!’ I was screeching now. “You need to get out of my house! Right now.”
William’s expression remained flat and stony, which only served to enrage me further. All at once, I couldn’t contain my impulses anymore. I launched the vase from my hand and threw it directly at William’s head.
The vase should have nailed him right in the forehead with a satisfying crack to the skull, hopefully causing him enough pain to send him running out of the front door.
But the vase went right through William’s head as easily as if it were made of air as if he didn’t have a solid form at all.
I stumbled backward as I hastily tried to put as much distance between William and I as I possibly could.
“What-what are you?” I stammered, my voice breaking.
‘No need to be alarmed, darling.” William said, his seemingly unshakeable calm still perfectly intact. “I’m a human being just like you, or at the very least, I used to be.”
“What do you mean?” I was close to sobbing now. “What the hell do you mean?”
I winced as William began to approach me and rested a hand on my shoulder that somehow felt like it was meant to be comforting.
“Like I said, I’m going to need you to calm down if I’m going to explain.” He said. “Have a seat on the couch, make yourself a cup of tea if you believe it will help. Take a few deep breaths. I will tell you everything you want to know about me.”
